I work with pastel pencils, PRISMACOLOR pencils, ink, water colour pencils, graphite and charcoal on paper.  Paper used is acid free archival quality stonehenge, mi-teintes (pastel paper) or water colour paper.

I compose the portrait from your photos.  As you can see by my “from photos to finish” page, the initial photos don’t have to be perfect – my aim is not to make an exact copy the photo, but to interpret a number of photos into a composition that captures their character.

The process:

  1. Please send your photos with your initial enquiry and I can let you know if they are suitable for me to work from.  (I cannot capture their expressions if the reference photo is out of focus, for example, and looking down at your sitting pet to take the photo produces a foreshortened image which won’t make sense hanging on a wall).
  2. I use a photo editing program to approximate the positioning of the image (head and shoulders or whole body) into the chosen size  (e.g. 11 x 14 inches) so you can approve the composition of the portrait before I start drawing.
  3.  Allow 4 weeks from the time we finalise the composition for the portrait to be finished, then I will contact you to arrange delivery and payment.  NOTE: any postage fees are additional to that of the portrait.

Framing:  I supply works on paper UN-FRAMED.  I generally compose the image to match standard frame sizes so you have the choice of having the piece professionally framed or can buy your own.  (For charcoal and pastel images, I recommend professional framing as the powder will transfer to the glass over time if not properly framed and the image will look “muddy”.)

Pricing:   As a rough guide, a portrait of a single pet on artist quality paper suitable for an 11 x 14 inch (275 mm x 350 mm) frame is AUD$200, and AUD$150 for a piece suitable for a  8 x 10 inch (200mm x 250mm) frame.
